Marie (La Croix) Smith

Marie (La Croix) Smith was born in Marcelin, Saskatchewan on January 16, 1914. In 1935, she graduated from the Misericordia General Hospital Nurse Training Program in Manitoba, becoming a nurse like her mother and sister.

During the Second World War, Marie volunteered as a Nursing Sister, joining the South African Military Medical Nursing Service in 1941, with the rank of Captain. After returning to Canada in 1943, she joined the Royal Canadian Army Medical Corps as Second Lieutenant. She went overseas to England in 1944, subsequently serving in military hospitals in Belgium, Holland and Germany. In June 1945, before returning to Canada, she came to Normandy to Saint-Vaast-en-Auge to visit the grave of her brother, George Richard La Croix, a paratrooper who had been killed on the night of June 5 to 6, 1944. She was discharged from military service in December 1945. After the war, Marie worked as a nurse and educator, remaining active in the nursing community. She married J. Leslie Smith in 1958 in South Africa.

Marie Smith passed away on November 10, 1996.
