Pillar of Action: 1) Reduce the direct/indirect environmental impact and promote a circular economy, and 2) engage with our visitors.
Starting Point: In 2019, the museum’s total emissions were 1096 tCO2e. To reach the 2050 goal (223.56 tCO2e), the museum will have to reduce its emissions by 5% per year.
Goal for 2050: In addition to reducing our emissions, the museum aims to achieve carbon neutrality by participating in the creation of carbon sinks.
Are you familiar with the concept of carbon sinks?
No? We weren’t either, but here’s what we’ve learned:
Carbon sinks occur in oceans, forests, and wetlands, and naturally absorb the CO2 present in the atmosphere. These CO2 emissions are partly caused by human activity. Unfortunately, we are creating more CO2 emissions (as well as other greenhouse gases) than natural carbon sinks can handle. This contributes to global warming. We can prevent this by reducing our CO2 emissions and increasing the amount of carbon sinks.

Our Action at the Juno Beach Centre:
In 2022, the Juno Beach Centre partnered with the National Forestry Office (ONF). The goal of this collaboration is to create carbon sinks by planting 52 tree clusters in the Cerisy State Forest.
This initiative aims to:
-
Contribute to the reforestation of the Cerisy State Forest
-
Help create carbon sinks
-
Offer donors the opportunity to contribute in their own way and honor the story of a Canadian soldier or regiment through the donation program “Trees for Canadian Heroes”
Our Upcoming Actions:
-
Create a model tree cluster on the Juno Park grounds
Framework: Since 2019, the Juno Beach Centre has initiated and implemented a sustainable development plan based on its greenhouse gas (GHG) assessment which aims to move towards a low carbon model while contributing to a more sustainable and united world.
This action falls within the framework of SDGs 13 and 15.
Some projects benefit from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) as part of the “Aid for the Ecological and Digital Transition of Tourism” in compensation for the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the tourism sector.
