Gordon Smith

Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) veteran Gordon B. Smith shares his experience as a wireless operator with Bomber Command during the Second World War. Gordon begins by sharing how his brother, who enlisted in the RCAF first, was killed in a flying accident in the United Kingdom. He discusses why he chose the air force, the experience of bombing Germany by night, and his specific role as a wireless operator. Gordon Smith served in 419 Squadron RCAF and 405 Squadron RCAF, the latter a pathfinder unit. Incredibly, he survived 59 missions over enemy territory.
