Marcel Ouimet
Marcel Ouimet was born in Montreal, Québec in 1915. He attended the University of Ottawa and the School of Socia Studies of l’Université de Paris. A journalist with Ottawa’s newspaper “Le Droit”, and perfectly bilingual, in 1939, he was recruited by Radio-Canada, the francophone public radio of the CBC, and sent overseas. In 1943, he followed the Canadian army to Italy and in 1944-45, covered the entire Northwest Europe Campaign. He landed on D-Day in Bernières-sur-Mer, shortly after the initial assault waves. For this French-Canadian reporter, the historical bond linking Canada Normandy was amply demonstrated on D-Day.
