A New Liberation Route to Follow in the Footsteps of Canadian Liberators

| July 4, 2025

The Juno Beach Centre is proud to announce the launch of a brand-new trail retracing the path of Canadian forces during the Liberation of Europe, from Juno Beach all the way to Germany, in partnership with the Liberation Route Europe Foundation.

This European trail, “Retracing the footsteps of Canadian liberators: a European trail” invites visitors to follow in the footsteps of Canadian soldiers, from the Normandy coastline to Germany, passing through Belgium and the Netherlands. This route highlights key locations where Canadians fought, liberated towns and villages, and often made the ultimate sacrifice.

As a Canadian museum and place of remembrance on the D-Day landing beaches, the Juno Beach Centre is especially proud to contribute to this project with a European dimension. Our partnership focuses on sharing historical expertise and promoting these sites that commemorate the commitment and sacrifices of Canadians.

This new route, which complements the Liberation Route Europe’s network of remembrance trails, offers the public a unique opportunity to discover—or rediscover—this history through points of interest, personal stories, and walking or cycling itineraries suitable for everyone.

We hope this project will further strengthen the transmission of remembrance and the bond between generations and the countries liberated thanks to the courage of Canadians.

The Retracing the Footsteps of the Canadian Liberators Trail is co-funded by Interreg North-West Europe.
