John Kitchener Hooton

Bombardier John Kitchener Hooton
Bracebridge, Ontario
Royal Canadian Artillery – 14 Field Regiment

Bombardier Hooton is sponsored by Brigadier-General Ernest Beno.
Bombardier Hooton était parrainé par  Brigadier-General Ernest Beno.

John was born in 1914 to George and Eliza Hooton.  He was the 6th born and the 3rd son. The family had immigrated to Canada in 1912. John was born in Muskoka Falls which is close to Bracebridge,  ON. They moved into Bracebridge at some point near 1920. John attended school in Bracebridge  and even went to high school. When he enlisted, John was driving taxis for my aunt in New Liskeard.  Unfortunately, John’s training and knowledge did not pan out as an explosive hit the gun carrier he was in shortly after landing on D-Day and the gun and its crew were destroyed. My father (John’s brother) was also on active duty in Italy on D-Day.

Below: An excerpt of a letter sent to “Hoot’s” mother after his death. The beginning of the letter has been lost.

“We are of course not positive that your son was in the gun when it was hit, but we know he was about a minute before and are therefore nearly positive he was at the time. I tell you all this so you will not hold out any false hopes, because none of us feel there is any hope. Everyone was killed instantly by the explosion.

The war has begun going pretty well with us since D-Day and since then we have had only one casualty. I can assure you that we are doing and will continue to do our best to avenge your son and the other members of his detachment.

I miss the Bdr of course, because he was one of my best N.C.O.’s and I counted on him a great deal to help me shoulder my responsibilities. Besides the purely practical reason I have mentioned above, Hoot, as we all called him, was always cheery, bright, keen, and a pleasure to have about. He trained and disciplined himself continuously for his job and I feel it is a shame that he had so little time to put his training to the test.

If there are any further details that you would like to have, you may drop me a line and I will do my bet to answer any questions, Dear.

I trust you will excuse this pencilled letter, but I lost my pen a few days ago and I guess I shall have to wait until another arrives from Canada, because there are none available here.

In closing, may I express the wish that out of this war will come sufficient happiness for you and those in your heart, that you may be able to feel your son’s sacrifice was not in vain.

Yours sincerely, J. B. Lesslie, Capt.”
