Robert Spencer recalls joining the Victoria Rifles of Canada after university graduation in 1941. He underwent three months intense training at Brockville, Ontario to qualify as an officer. Posted overseas as a reinforcement officer he joined 4th Canadian Armoured Division and participated in Operation Totalize, a major armoured thrust south of Caen. Spencer recalls in particular how the infantry moved through on improvised armoured personnel carriers. He also describes a particularly hard battle at the Küsten Canal in Germany just before the end of the war.
