Over the holidays, the Juno Beach Centre guides have been offering a Christmas During the War workshop, providing historical background what Christmas from 1939 to 1945 would have been like for Canadian soldiers and their families back home. Their only connection to their families would have been by radio and letters. The workshop included touching stories, a letter from a soldier to his daughter the Christmas before the landings and objects from our collections. Visitors also had the chance to sample a special “one-egg cake”, a wartime cake from a cookbook of rationed recipes! This was a very popular item with children, as well as the oranges, which during wartime, made for very special Christmas presents!
