2018 Itinerary


SATURDAY JULY 28: Departure Toronto – Paris

After an initial welcome briefing at Toronto’s Pearson International Airport, we board an overnight transatlantic flight to Charles de Gaulle airport in Paris.

SUNDAY JULY 29: Arrival in Paris – Arras

We are met by our Bus Driver and Tour Director at Charles de Gaulle Airport in Paris and immediately make our way to Beaumont-Hamel to visit the site that commemorates Newfoundland’s contribution to the First World War. Afterwards we visit the Thiepval Monument and Interpretive Centre before arrival at our hotel in Arras. This evening, we enjoy a welcome reception with our Tour Director and fellow travelers.

MONDAY JULY 30: Arras to Dieppe

This morning we visit the Memorial at Vimy Ridge including a guided tour of the tunnels. Later, we visit the German cemetery of Neuville St. Vaast and the Canadian cemetery of Cabaret Rouge before heading to the town of Amiens for lunch. We then make our way to Dieppe for the night. Dinner will be served at a local restaurant.

TUESDAY JULY 31: Dieppe to Honfleur

This morning we tour all three sectors of Dieppe where the ill-fated Raid on Dieppe took place in August 1942. We visit the Royal Regiment of Canada memorial at Puys, stroll the main beach in Dieppe, and the western sectors in Pourville. We also stop at the Dieppe Canadian cemetery. Later in the day we make our way to the seaside village of Honfleur in Normandy. Overnight in Honfleur.

WEDNESDAY AUGUST 1: Honfleur – Ranville – Juno Beach – Bayeux

We make our way to the D-Day landing beaches to visit the Pegasus Bridge memorial and museum in Ranville. We then travel to the Canadian sector for our first briefing on the eastern edge of Juno Beach at Saint-Aubin-sur-Mer. An historical walk will follow, with a visit to Bernières-sur-Mer, the famous Queen’s Own Rifles House (Canada House) for lunch, and Bény-sur-Mer Canadian cemetery. We then travel to our hotel in Bayeux where we will stay for the next four nights.

THURSDAY AUGUST 2: Juno Beach Centre Summer Institute

Today we visit the Juno Beach Centre where we enjoy a guided tour of the museum, the bunkers, and of course, the beach. Following a catered lunch, the afternoon is dedicated to professional development presentations and workshops. Discussions include integrating the Historical Thinking Concepts and exploring options for connecting tour experiences to provincial curricula. We return to Bayeux for the evening.

FRIDAY AUGUST 3: Canadian Sector and Battle of Normandy Sites

Today we follow in the footsteps of the 9th Canadian Brigade as they advanced through Normandy. We stop in the village of Authie, and visit the Abbaye d’Ardennes, before heading to Le Mesnil-Patry to enjoy a traditional Norman lunch with villagers. Later we return to the JBC. Overnight in Bayeux.

SATURDAY AUGUST 4: British and American Sectors

This morning we travel to the American sectors at Omaha Beach to visit the Interpretive Centre and cemetery. We also stop at Pointe du Hoc and at La Cambe German cemetery. We head to Arromanches-les-Bains for lunch. In the afternoon, we head up the cliffs overlooking the Mulberry Harbour. Overnight in Bayeux.

SUNDAY AUGUST 5: Falaise Pocket Sector – Cintheaux – Juno

Today we visit the village of Verrières and attend a ceremony at Cintheaux Canadian cemetery in Bretteville-sur-Laize. We then head back to the coast for lunch in Graye-sur-Mer with local villagers. In the afternoon, retrace the steps of the Western sector of Juno Beach on a guided tour, or enjoy free time in Courseulles-sur-Mer. In the evening we enjoy dinner hosted by the Juno Beach Centre Association. Overnight in Bayeux.

MONDAY AUGUST 6: Bayeux – Paris

This morning we check out of our hotel in Bayeux and make our way back to Paris. Upon arrival, a local guide shows us the Arc de Triomphe, the Champs Elysées and we ascend up the Eiffel Tower for an unparalleled view of the city. The rest of the day is at your leisure to explore the ‘City of Light’.

TUESDAY AUGUST 7: Paris – Toronto

This morning after breakfast, we are transferred to Charles de Gaulle Airport for our return flight to Canada.
