Juno Beach Centre | Canada in WWII
2008 comments

Absolutely amazing and impacting. The information was educational yet presented in entertaining ways, the beach was beautiful and it really opened my eyes to the events that occurred here so long ago.

Upon arriving in Normandy, I have been immersed in history; Canadian history. Here at the Juno Beach Centre is the greatest example of this experience: the lives of past Canadians are explored and displayed in a manner that gives me the ability to put a face to a name. In essence, I feel the Juno Beach Centre stops history from being statistics and instead allows history to be what it should be; the narratives of people.

Today is a very special day for the 33 students of Centre Dufferin - 18 months of hard work preparing the inauguration of 46 bricks.

Very interactive. I love the beginning film; you get a little taste of a soldier’s life back in the war. I myself am going into the military and this Centre is a very good way of showing how the war affected everything from money to population. I had a very good first impression; the videos honestly gave me goose bumps. Thank you for the Centre, I will be back at any chance I get.

Normandy was almost like a book. When the tide was out I could imagine what it must have been like for the troops landing. I liked the design of the Centre, and I also liked the artefacts that seemed to be covered by barnacles. I was overall impressed, and plan to be return in the summer.

I thought the Centre was a great representation of Canada’s contribution to the war. There was a great amount of detail about all aspects of the war, and the section focusing on Canadian culture was fantastic. The videos, the artefacts, the information, props, and especially the landing experience all created a very real and dramatic effect. Overall, I believe it to be a fitting tribute to the soldiers who fought and died.

What a tremendous experience for all of us and from a learning perspective -engaging / interactive / unique and from an emotional point of view - the location combined with primary sources and clearly Canadian focus made a tremendous impact upon the students. I think they understand far more clearly the sacrifices made here.

The guided beach tour was excellent and well delivered. The students clearly understood the history and it was right for their ability. The whole tour was well paced and interactive which suits our students well. The introduction film's location and set-up was also impressive in terms of understanding the emotions of soldiers which is one of the aims of the trip! Many thanks!

Juno Beach is beautiful, historic and full of wonder. It taught our class a lot and the scenery is amazing as well. We enjoyed the museum and the beach tour a lot. I especially loved the 5 minute film that was shown to our class about the life of the soldiers before we entered the museum. Thank you so much!

Visiting the beach and the Juno Beach Centre is a very interesting and rewarding experience because it is different than just learning about the facts. By comming here, you actually get to see the beach and make connections.

The Juno Beach Centre is a very beautiful museum. The info is very interesting and it impacts me more since it’s not from a textbook and we get to see the sites. The memories from the Juno Beach Centre will last forever in our minds because in a way we’ve received the experience and we’ve seen artefacts and locations that better explain what the war was like for our soldiers.

I feel a very welcoming and honouring atmosphere here at Normandy. There has been so much joy and sorrows in my heart as I mourn for those who have passed away but also proudly remember these soldiers. It has been such a heart touching experience for me to see that the deaths of the soldiers are remembered and honoured here. Thank you so much for maintaining this Centre and being a memorial for those who gave up their lives for the peace of you and me. God bless.

During my class’ visit to Normandy, I was made aware of the loss and suffering of troops especially during, my visit to the Juno Beach Centre. I was also enlightened about how much the Canadian troops contributed to the war, the correction of an error of nation-select information in classes.

Done very well, gives a great view of what Canada and the men that died for us went through for the freedom that we now have. The sadness that was felt for those who lost their lives for our freedom and what Canada had to do to help the men out at war.

We think the idea to put objects in the boxes out of glass is a great idea. It is in a positive way different from other museums! It is good for people to make the experience themselves with objects that soldiers used. The guided beach tour outside was very nice to see, especially because we had someone to explain what we saw. The museum itself was not that exciting in comparison to the other parts of our visit. In my opinion, the museum is too subjective, of course Canada’s history can’t be shown differently but I would wish for more neutrality in the description of the Second World War. Overall the Juno Beach Centre is a very nice visit!

In general, the Juno Beach Centre is a great opportunity to get informed about the history of the this significant place. The guided tour on the beach especially impressed me. But also to work with the historical boxes was fun, and I also learned something. It was the first time for our group to get in contact with authentic historical material.

The pictures and the objects in the museum are very impressive and the guided tour on the beach has been very interesting. Handling the artefacts was very interesting and we had some fun with it. The Centre's staff was very friendly and open to our questions. All together I enjoyed the time and learned something new about D-Day. Thank you very much.

Our trip’s motto is: “Europe: then and now”. After visiting Brussels (EU, NATO) we came to visit some of the historical WWII places. We found all the information we needed via internet. But it was very hard to decide what to do because there is so much offered. We decided on the Juno Beach Centre because of the workshops “History at your Finger Tips”, because working with “real” objects/artefacts makes history more lively. We are also going to visit the Documentation Centre in Caen. Our visit at the Juno Beach Centre consisted of 3 different parts: the workshops, the guided beach tour, the museum which was an ideal combination of looking, listening and doing. We are now watching our students working with the boxes and they are all working in a concentrated way. They are obviously enjoying their work as history now has a “face” for them. The JBC staff are very friendly […] and we are sure students will take a lot home with them.

I think Normandy is great, a beautiful region, good food, etc. The visit of the Juno Beach Centre was very interesting, especially the workshop “History at your Finger Tips”. You can understand the history, facts of D-Day. It is even an chance to speak English while making presentations.

Very thoughtfully put together. Good use of multimedia (movie, artefacts, etc.) A bit heavy on the reading for those who aren’t in that sort of things… yet at the same time, for those who take the time, it provides a complete and thorough context and view of not only troop activity in Europe, but at home in Canada and on other fronts. Thanks!

My first impression was that clearly, a great deal of time and effort had been put into the Centre. This was as a direct result of the splendid architecture and picturesque surroundings. As I entered the Centre I was amazed by the different exhibits, each with its own aspect ranging from great life-size models to the smallest of miniatures. The Centre definitely portrayed the aspects of the battle front and the home front. I did, however, not enjoy the introduction video as the footage is rather blurry and difficult to follow. In conclusion, the Juno Beach Centre was a great place to learn and give homage to those who fought and died on Juno Beach, and should be viewed as a source for people to view the greatness of our country and its proud history.

I found Normandy to be a charmingly quaint despite its bloody history and tainted past. The first thing that struck me was the beauty of it all; houses, shops, beaches and it seemed that a carousel existed in every town! The Juno Beach Centre is a delightful sight to behold, especially when one learns the significance behind each structure, each picture, each object, even the expressions on soldiers’ faces! I found the staff to be extremely knowledgeable when describing accurately the situations and the exhibitions were as entertaining as they were mentally satisfying. Bravo!

Very personal and very powerful exhibit. The displays and the testimonials were the most moving that I have seen in Normandy. I was extremely impressed with our tour guide Guillaume. He was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. The only disappointment is the film at the entrance to the museum. It is not informative at all. You should see the film at Pearl Harbour (at the Arizona Memorial) to know the effect you are aiming at.

I have found my visit to Normandy fascinating. To actually stand on the battlefield that I have heard so much about is incredible. The Juno Beach Centre I thought was an impressive, modern, different, an interesting tribute to the brave Canadian troops that fought for freedom.

The guided beach tour is very good. The movie at the beginning however is a little dry and very cheesy. I find the rooms in the main museum very interactive and informative.

I appreciated the small, yet concise permanent exhibit. It has a lot of info that sets the right amount of historical context about Canada before the war. It’s easy for Canadian history to be overshadowed by those who are more commonly associated with the major events and changes in the world. This site is important for the preservation of the Canadian story. The room at the end that tells different immigrant stories is excellent.

These souls were the light in the time of darkness. I think it is hard to honour them in a befitting way. However, I think the Juno Beach Centre does an outstanding job of such.

This is an excellent Centre. Our guide, Kate, was terrific as she simply and clearly explained the Canadian role in the Normandy invasion. The introductory film does a good job of setting up the rest of the experience in the museum. For me, this is a place that touches both head and heart.

Very interesting and would come to France just to come here. The beach tour was better than the museum. Also the introduction film wasn’t very good. This could have been better by just having 1 wall and not 3 that don’t flow.

— July 07, 2008

I think that going to visit the beaches was very moving. That part of the tour was extremely realistic and I enjoyed it. The film was slightly disappointing, it was very unrealistic and this could be improved by maybe putting a simulator for the public to go in and experience what being in a plane was like. By doing this we may have got a clear picture of what the landings were actually like.

We have enjoyed our visit. It was interesting to have the guided tour and the guide did a fantastic job despite the heavy rain. The film was good although it might have been improved by making it all about the landings. The museum was just right. Thank you.

An overwhelming experience! A million thoughts but very difficult to describe in words. A MUST visit to appreciate what we have, why we have it and most importantly who we are. Very impressive tour through the Juno Beach Centre - very informative! Even better walking guided tour from the JBC to the beach. Thought provoking, images of our troops attempting to endure this horrific challenge! Thank you!

I think Juno Beach has wonderful sights such as the German bunker. It is really well looked after. I also think the information is really understandable and teaches a lot. I am always amazed and emotional when I come to places of great combat and sacrifice and the Normandy beaches are no exception. It is important to remember all who fought here and did “their bit” to attain victory for the Allies in World War Two – and the old imperial connection is often overlooked. This museum goes some way in redressing the balance in regard to the role that Canadian forces played in the war – and the many theatres of war they contributed to. The museum also gives a balanced, fully informed presentation of the nature of Canada and Canadian involvement in a high tech setting without losing the human touch of the many experiences of Canadians in war. Excellent!

I think it was very good because it was very hands on. I liked the fact that there was lots of touch screens and buttons and things you can pick up and look at. I also think that it was especially good for children. I learned a lot from the videos because they had a lot of information. This is our third trip to Normandy with our Year 1 children. We are always amazed at how much we learn, how much emotion we share and more importantly, how much the children value the sacrifice made by so many. We visited the Juno Beach Centre last year-quite by chance. This year we made a definitive booking-wonderful, friendly guides and a museum that gives a different perspective for our students. I think that this Centre is the best way to preserve these memories. The exhibits were helpful because they showed us historic artefacts taken right off the beach. The part that I enjoyed the most was the walking on the beach because I was standing on such an important piece of Canadian history. This experience brought the reality of war very close to us. My visit to Normandy has been an amazing experience that I will never forget. I have seen the beach where my fellow Canadians landed and sacrificed themselves for the good of our nation. I have learned a lot from the guide around the beach and the exhibit that we toured. Without these Canadian soldiers who fought here, we would not have won the Battle of Normandy and I would not be here today.

I am impressed with all that is shown in here. It makes everything seem more real when there are things (pictures, films, etc.) that help us make the connections to the soldiers. I am absolutely grateful for being able to visit a Centre like this because it brings a certain reality to the war which cannot be found in a textbook. All of the exhibits artefacts and videos are effective in telling the stories of the many soldiers. This Center has been extremely educational for the understanding of Canadian involvement in WWII. Sitting in history class was boring indeed but the displays, videos, and interactive exhibits made me actually want to learn more.

In general, there are great museums about WWII and especially about D-Day in Normandy. We found the fact of being on the same beach as the one where a battle was fought is very impressive and emotional. The beach tour was well done and captivating. The museum is very dense and filled with loads of information, some we were not aware of.

My overall trip to Normandy was fun and educational. The Juno Beach Centre has been very interesting and helpful in the events of World War II. Today had the pleasure of visiting the Juno Beach Centre. I did not think we would have the time to visit this year but when we found ourselves with some extra time, you kindly arranged a slot and a guide to give us an introductory talk. In our follow up questionnaire with the pupils, your museum came out top! They thought it was well set out and clearly explained the circumstances of the Canadian involvement in D-Day and they particularly enjoyed the interactive aspects of the displays. I really look forward to bringing more of our pupils again next year. It was a thoroughly enjoyable visit and one I would recommend to anyone wanting to learn about the Normandy invasion.

I think the best way to sum up my experience at the Juno Beach Centre was powerful and enlightening. Prior to my experience here, I looked at war and was often disturbed by the sacrifice of all the countries involved, rather than being grateful to those that literally gave their lives so that I could live freely as a Canadian citizen. Here at the Juno Beach Centre, I have gained a new perspective that has me looking through the eyes of a soldier and that has greatly enhanced the appreciation I have for what they have done for me and my country.

The Centre is amazing and makes you truly feel like a proud Canadian. The beach tour was very well done. The only thing I would change is the two virtual kids that lead the tour in the Centre. All in all I’m still in awe, the whole thing was amazing and our guide was excellent.

The students found the exhibits and displays very informative and moving. As young Canadians, they had studied the World Wars in Social Studies but had never experienced the personal history of the young soldiers as displayed by the Centre. For many it is an essential eye opener.

The overall Centre is beautifully constructed. We especially liked the re-construction of the landing craft in the film room and what it felt like to be one of the soldiers approaching the beaches. The listening booths where you can sit down and listen to the people talking were very insightful. We found this Centre to be very educational. Thank you so much.

I’ve found the visit to Normandy a great trip and extremely interesting. The Juno Beach Centre was a highlight of the trip. The museum was very well organised and overall everything I saw I found very interesting. Overall on this trip I think the most amazing factor was how the soldiers coped with the pain, stress, and physical side of the war. I would like to thank everyone who has made this trip a pleasure to come on.

The museum had lots of different ways of finding out facts about D-Day and WWII such as computers, headphones, reading and the written information. It’s hard to imagine what our grandfathers went through. Looking at the terrain of the region blows my mind of the courage they had, but most importantly their heroism. The Juno Beach Centre shows us in an easy to understand but fun way about our grandfathers and what they did for our country, which truly touches the heart. Our tour guide was outstanding, very knowledgeable about everything. She made it interesting, made me want to learn.

This Centre is an excellent way to honour and express our appreciation for the brave soldiers who risked their lives fighting for our freedom. It has been put together very well. I loved the diversity and interactivity of the exhibits. You learnt more about D-Day by seeing it here in front of you than you do by pictures in a classroom. I really had no understanding of Juno and D-Day at all, but this tour experience made me realize that us as Canadians helped defeat Nazi Germany. I realized that those brave men and women gave their lives for freedom. And that is a great representation of Canadians.

The Juno Beach Centre was a personal educational experience. It showed many things and artefacts from the Second World War and it told facts that I never knew before, like the Canadian troops had pushed their way from the beaches of Normandy. When we stepped out onto the beach, an immediate feeling of sadness came over me because of the fact that someone most likely died right where I was standing. The wind was blowing really hard and it was raining so it felt like D-Day. The Centre brought the feeling of sadness at first but replaced it with one of satisfaction in knowing that these boys actually wanted to protect Canada and its peoples. I enjoyed the talk from the nurse [Canadian D-Day nurse presentation] because we don’t often get the story from that point of view. I like the way you can interact with the historical objects. I feel honoured by being here but also slightly sickened by the knowledge of how many people died. I especially remember the way all the artefacts were preserved; like the tank. I think the building and statues are amazing especially the one in front with the five soldiers landing.

It was a very interesting experience to go and learn more about the Canadian involvement in the war. I have seen a talk from a Canadian Red Cross worker [Canadian D-Day Nurse presentation] and looked/wore objects from the war. I will remember the talk about the war. The museum is great! It is very interesting and has great informative talks!

It meant a lot. We went on the outdoor beach tour, watched the movie [introduction to the museum] and saw the museum. I will take away that Canada made a big impact in the D-Day invasion. I liked the museum and the beach tour was fine but the movie could be longer and with some chairs.

It was very interesting to see how the French perceived our contributions to the war. The intro movie had cool scenes but it scenes were a bit random and most of the dialog that could be heard did not seem to make much sense. It would have been better to either hear from soldiers on D-Day or from world leaders at the time. I believe it would have had more of an impact for me. Overall, the experience was enlightening and exciting, I had no idea a place like this would be so focused on Canada.

Tremendous memorial. I like the symbolism and quality of the memorial building. Good guided tour of the beach with enthusiastic young tour guide. Quality exhibits inside the museum. A remembrance of war, not a glorification of war. Computer info was a good way to present info to young people.

I've been taking students to Europe every year since 2005, and I always bring them to Juno Beach. A stop at the Juno Beach Centre is a must for any Canadian group travelling in France. The guides always do an excellent job of bringing the story of Juno Beach to life for the students. [...] Take them to Juno Beach, to see where the Canadian landings actually took place. To add to the experience, be sure to visit the nearby Canadian Second World War cemetery of Bény. The students always come away from this day in Normandy with a great sense of respect for the sacrifices of past generations, and pride in their country's contribution to the liberation of Europe.

The experience was wonderful. I think it is safe to say that every member of our group learned so much and we all grew a bit as individuals. The Juno Beach Centre truly honours this part of our Canadian history. It seems surreal to me that I am actually standing here on the beaches where so many soldiers, specifically Canadians, fought and lost their lives. I found the tour of Juno Beach and then the visit of the Centre very helpful as it enabled me to put myself in the place of the soldiers and how they lived. Going through the museum really helped me to understand the difference of life. Thank you. This is definitely an asset to Canadian society!

I felt very lucky and proud to be a Canadian when visiting the Juno Beach Centre. It is truly disappointing that we did not have a place such as this to acknowledge our soldiers until recently. Canada is a fairly new country without a lot of history. However, the Juno Beach Centre is something everyone in our nation should visit, value, and respect. My visit to Normandy has been incredibly insightful and educational. I was very impressed with the Juno Beach Centre in particular. It is very informative and provides an accurate depiction of Canadian life during Second World War. I find it fascinating that the Centre provides details both about the war itself and the effort back at home. This makes it much more relatable for Canadians. Being able to see the actual places where Canadian troops fought was very humbling. I can say I am even more proud to be Canadian. Overall, this is a site that all Canadians should have a chance to visit.

I was really excited to see the video but it was not what I expected. I thought it would give us a first person view of what it was like to land on Juno. I think that would have been amazing [for us in high school] but bad for children. I like the posters all over. I was impressed by the fact that the museum offered much more than I anticipated. I assumed the Centre would focus mainly on Canada’s role in D-Day. I quickly realized that much, much, more was offered, from Canada’s role in Italy to Canadian action after D-Day and much more. It is quite obvious that a tremendous amount of work went into the creation of this facility. I have brought students to Juno Beach for 14 years. Very pleased to have a proper memorial here. Interpretive staff did a very good orientation talk out front. The Centre is overall one of the greatest contributions to Canadian history. It was extremely effective, interactive, and well executed. I found the Centre to be a very effective learning tool connecting the textbooks to real life. The way the museum utilizes all our senses and leaning styles is, I feel, the best way to engage all students. This is also the first European Canadian museum that talks about all the fronts of the war: Europe, Africa, and Asia. The exhibits were easy to navigate through and really brought my textbook to life (e.g. I remember reading about the 7 McConnell brothers who all enlisted and survived WWII).

I have thoroughly enjoyed visiting Normandy, especially the Juno Beach Centre. Coming from Canada, I am really enjoying being able to learn more about history. Places like the Juno Beach Centre allow me to be interactive, making for a better learning experience. The movie [introduction film] that was shown to us enabled me to get a better grasp of how it really was and allowed me to see in a way through their [Canadian soldier’s] eyes. Going through Canada during the 1930s created learning opportunities that go beyond the classroom. Being able to see the different artefacts has allowed me to fully grasp the reality of the war.

When I was coming here, I didn’t know what to expect. I didn’t know whether there would be a museum, memorial, or whether we would even be able to walk on the beach. The tour guide was amazing. She knew a lot and was clearly passionate about the subject. It was amazing to be able to walk on the sand where so many were killed. The movie [introduction film] was well thought out and it was interesting to see it from a soldier’s view. The museum was very informative and the quizzes [student questionnaire] made me actually read the information.

The visit was part of a 9-day tour of battlefields and museums in Belgium, France, and England. Our students were very moved and their experiences certainly brought WWI and WWII closer to them. “Overwhelmed” is the only word that can describe how I feel. All the years of reading about this war and watching all the documentaries and now I’m on the same battlefields where these brave young soldiers fought and died. It’s amazing to me how these men made the ultimate sacrifice of leaving their family and country for peace and freedom. This exceedingly well done tribute to the Canadians landing at Juno Beach is something our students will always remember. From the photography, to the audio-visual video-clips, this display is interactive, informative and powerful. The voices played on the radios also hold a power over the listener. The scroll at the end of the tour (where watching the names of Canadian how died during WWII would take 13.5 hours to complete) was an especially poignant conclusion. Well, well done.

The Centre here at Juno Beach does an amazing job at giving you the facts and history about what our Canadian forces went through. Normandy is an area that all North Americans should come and see as it gives you a whole new respect for what our brave soldiers truly went through. The symbolism of the building and the nature of the [introductory] film force the students to reflect on the soldiers’ experiences. It helps them to feel first hand the nature of war.

To walk on the beach where our ancestors once fought for freedom was a humbling experience. At first glance Juno seems like a simple, sandy beach, but the feeling you get when walking in the footprints of brave men is something remarkable. No classroom lesson can bring you this much realisation or this much appreciation, as physically being there has brought us. The Juno Beach Centre has done a wonderful job retelling these stories, and helping us understand the ultimate sacrifices that were made for our lives and our freedom.

[...] Merci de votre accueil.

It helped us appreciate a part of history that we never witnessed. Moreover, we were able to discover the significant participation of the Canadians and the Second World War as well as the history and roots of the Canadians. The memories we will take with us is the understanding of the sacrifice and unity of people from different nationalities to fight for freedom. The beach tour was well organized and the museum is impressive, especially as it is made of titanium.

I thought the beach tour with Janette was great. Very knowledgeable staff. The info in the museum is wonderful. I really like the objects found on the beach. Being from the US you really get a one-sided opinion of the war. It was nice to hear the Canadian side of the war.

At first, to be honest, I didn’t know the relationship between WWII and Canada. After the exhibit, I understand the importance of Canada in WWII. And I really like the film in the museum, it’s really good.

A thorough preparation and presentation of historical sources of the time which gave my students a first-hand insight into the political reasoning leading to WWII. Canada’s role is often unjustly underestimated. As the start of our Normandy trip, this was a well chosen venue, which welcomed my student group from all over the world very warmly and let us reconnect with some Canadian memories.
