The opening of the Juno Beach Centre, June 6th 2003

The Juno Beach Centre was opened in Normandy on 6 June, 2003. Many veterans and their families were not able to attend the ceremonies in France, but there were other options. Ceremonies to commemorate the opening of the Centre, and to honour the veterans and that generation of Canadians were held simultaneously at locations in Canada. At many of these locations, the live television broadcast of the opening in Normandy was shown. Military units of Canada’s present day Armed Forces paraded at these ceremonies in honour of the veterans, and in many cases, the militia units in these parades were from the same area of Canada as the veterans attending.
