The Juno Beach Centre Association has achieved
its funding target for building the Centre.
The Association’s funding goal was
$8.1 million. In addition, the Association
created a contingency account in order to
pay for the additional costs of currency
fluctuations and project items that were
not originally forecast. The contingency
account currently contains $2,000,000. Although
the target to build the Centre has been
achieved, the Association continues to accept
donations. They will be used to improve
the surrounding site for 2004 and fund the
ongoing pedagogical mission of the Association.
Bricks are still available for sale.
The following summarizes the funding provided
to build the Juno Beach Centre.
French Government
Funding:
Funding for the JBC was provided by the
Conseil general du Calvados (457,357 euro),
the Conseil Regional de Basse Normandie
(457,357 euro), the Prefet de Basse Normandie
(305,000 euro) and the Ministry of Defense
(153,000 euro). The total was 1,372,714
euro or $2,196,342.
Canadian Government
Funding
The Minister of Veterans Affairs provided
$2,000,000, the Minister of Heritage $253,000,
the Province of Ontario provided $1,000,000,
the Province of British Columbia provided
$1,000,000, the Province of Alberta $100,000
and other provinces lesser amounts. The
total received was $4,418,000. The Minister
of Veterans Affairs also provided $500,000
to assist with the cost of opening the JBC.
Contributions from
Canadians & others
Donations from over 11,000 individuals and
organizations across Canada raised $3,500,000.
A large portion of that money was raised
by Wal-Mart Canada Inc., who made a cash
contribution of $1,500,000 as a result of
their internal fund raising initiatives.
These activities were undertaken by in store
associates with help from local veterans.
Wal-Mart spent an almost equal amount in
directly supporting JBC fund raising activities
including a prime time TV commercial. The
balance of the funds were collected through
the titanium brick program and a wide range
of activities that produced anywhere from
$100 to $100,000 in donations from individuals,
corporations, cities and foundations.
