— 14 novembre 2009

Well organised. Did not really find the temporary exhibit about the First Nations relevant. The permanent displays were interesting and flowed well. My favourite part was reading about the people who received a Victoria Cross.

— 13 novembre 2009

Overall, I found the use of different media to convey information very effective. This appealed to everyone, as we could choose to read the information, listen to it, or even get hands-on experience. In the exhibits, the artefacts also helped give a visual representation of what life was like then. The introduction movie was innovative by using six screens to give an all around view of the experience of that time. The repeating sounds and views appealed to the senses and helped retain information and get maximum impact from the film. Overall, the Juno Beach Centre is a great place! I found I was able to truly picture that day, 65 years ago, and everything leading up to it and occurring afterwards. Thank you.

— 13 novembre 2009

The museum is very informative. I liked it very much. I liked how the museum covered all the different learning styles (visual, auditory, kinaesthetic) in the exhibits. I like how each room follows a different time period. I also like how in the glass cases there is not just military stuff but other interesting objects like old Francs. I enjoyed the additional information on the computers near the end. I thought it was very touching how we could listen to letters from loved ones in the war. […] I really liked the temporary exhibit “Voices of the First Peoples of Canada”; the part about the Métis was very interesting and the most informative. I give this museum a 9.5/10.

I am so glad to see such a great memorial centre here. It is a pleasure to be a chaperone of 62 students and to see how this affects them. They have learned a lot. The Juno Beach Centre was amazing and I just wish we had more time to read and view more.

I found it really interesting. I really liked looking around the bunker and thank you very much to our guide who I found very interesting. I really enjoyed looking around the actual Centre and I especially enjoyed the temporary exhibit about the Canadians in Italy. I was also amazed at how successful the Air Force training was.

Jamie Vigran (élève)

— 17 septembre 2009

I had a great time. Our guide (Annika) gave an extremely good tour outside. I thought that the explanations and the facts given were extremely good. It was really fun going into the observation bunker. The Centre itself was really, really good with the Italy temporary exhibit being amazing. The introduction film gave a realistic idea of the life of a soldier in D-Day landing and WWII. The other part of the permanent exhibit with real items was a true insight into the truth of WWII and the things Canada did in it. The videos were a great thing as interviews with veterans tell a lot. Finally the audio and videos made a great end to an amazing visit of a more than wonderful Centre.

Finn Campbell (élève)
Highfield Prep School (United Kingdom)

— 17 septembre 2009

The Juno Beach Centre was really interesting and I learnt a lot about Canadian soldiers and the Second World War. It was really interesting seeing the bunker and how close the bunker used to be to the beach. The other thing that I enjoyed was looking at the photograph that our guide (Annika) showed us as the guns the Germans placed nearby. I had a really great day and our guide was really nice.

Good layout - spacious and easy to follow. Hands on exhibit, allowing children the ability to touch (which they like to do!) Many outlets to get information - computers, radios, library, newspaper, tvs and earphones.

Merci !

— 24 juin 2009

The film was an unusual way to begin the visit and I am not sure it had the desired effect. I feel something more informative would be better. However, I feel the museum was highly informative with regard to the proceedings of the Second World War, in particular the role played by the Canadians was much greater than I realised. I felt the vast numbers of exhibits on display highly enhanced the experience, as did the interactive features.

Holly R. (élève)
University of London Air Squadron (United Kingdom)

— 24 juin 2009

Did not realise extent of Canadian effort during the war other than D-Day Landings. Juno Beach Centre provided valuable insight into this subject. Introduction film setup is very effective and may benefit from more use with a longer film. Museum exhibits in the main rooms are very interesting and valuable. I especially enjoyed the examples of 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion uniforms.

Jason G. (élève)
University of London Air Squadron (United Kingdom)

— 24 juin 2009

The Juno Beach Centre is an important part of a week long educational trip by members of ULAS. We visit regularly and have subscribed to the continuation of the Centre. We found the visit most informative and it put into perspective the massive contribution the people of Canada made during WW2. The guide (Grant) set the scene with a confident and 'from the heart' brief tour which we found to be at the right level for our students. Thank you for an informative visit.

Mike Wood (professeur)
University of London Air Squadron (United Kingdom)

Superbe visite, parfaitement adaptée aux scolaires. Beaucoup d’informations.

— 11 juin 2009

Wow ! What a fantastic museum ! This was a great experience for both the adult teachers and the boys ! Our students enjoyed the "History on Wheels" presentation (with our guide Ian) at the end in particular. The fact that they could touch bits and pieces of the Canadian soldier’s uniform was very exciting for them ! We all enjoyed the documentary films on life as a trainee pilot, the War Effort, life in Aldershot Baracades, etc.… Furthermore, it was wonderful to learn more about Canada in general ! We will be back next year !!!

My overall impression of the Juno Beach Centre is that it is very educational and well put together. I learned a few large aspects of the war that I knew nothing about. I think this was a good learning experience.

— 05 juin 2009

Amazing is the only way to describe my experience here. As soon as I walked in the doors I already felt closer to home. The exhibits and the introductory film were exquisite in detail. The atmosphere created made the words on the walls come alive with the history inscribed in the text books that I have studied over the years of my schooling. A true testament to the Canadian sacrifices of the Second World War.

Michael Y. (élève)
Juno Beach Academy of Canadian Studies (Alberta, Canada)

Good, however as the school is named after this great event it would be nice for the lads to be given more opportunities at no cost.

Quite striking. Good progression through time up until D-Day. The personal objects and letters really humanize the displays. Well done !

— 04 juin 2009

— 22 mai 2009

The Centre does a good job of describing Canadian society during the time of the Second World War. It provides insight into the lives of the soldiers and brings greater understanding to what happened on Juno Beach. A great experience for remembering those who sacrificed their lives for our country and for those who live on to tell about it.

— 19 mai 2009

We liked our visit and the memorials are filled with many deaths of Canadian people. We didn’t realise how many there was. We found the introduction film interesting and how we felt when we were watching it. It’s very clever. When we entered the museum after the film, we liked the activities and the layout. We especially liked the map on the floor. Although the museum was quite small, there was a lot of facts and interesting things! We enjoyed our stay. THANK YOU! The gift shop was great and good for value! Our guide, Grant, was very good and made everything clear. We learned a lot from him during the beach tour like: - A bunker takes a couple of months to build - What the statue in front means - How to block off invaders on the beaches - What the stone statue (Inuksuk) is for

It was good that we had a tour guide. He answered all our questions. It was interesting to find out what the memorial meant. It was good to see the introduction film from the point of view of the ship. It made you think about what it was like for the men. In the museum, the interactive things were good, they got everyone interested. We liked the display glass with the personal letters of soldiers to their families. It made the war seem more real. Thank you!

My overall impression of the Juno Beach Centre is firstly the artefacts are absolutely amazing, especially the objects found on the war site. Also, the introduction movie was interesting, if a bit vague. It was nice to see actual French people participating in the exhibits and learning about history that is not their own. It was all in all an interesting and very informative trip.

We enjoyed visiting the Centre and learning about the reality of the war and the hardships that the soldiers had to endure. It was kind of sad, visualizing the soldiers running from their boats with eighty pounds on their backs while dodging enemy fire. We will never forget this experience.

The Juno Beach Centre is a great historical landmark to visit. With all of the German defence systems, to the great guides, showing you what it would have been like to be on the battlefields. Inside all the exhibits are very realistic, there are some actual artefacts with some real equipment still in good condition. The film with the introduction was amazing! It was one of the most realistic war-like videos I’d ever seen! Overall my visit to the Juno Beach Centre was great and I’d love to go again another day!

I really enjoyed visiting the Juno Beach Centre. My favourite bit was visiting the German bunker because it really brought D-Day back to life. I found it especially interesting as the 65th anniversary of D-Day was coming up. I also found the D-Day nurse presentation very interesting. I really liked how we could handle objects from the war. The only thing I could recommend would be to have more comparisons from World War II equipment and modern day equipment.

We were impressed by our guide who passed on his considerable historical knowledge with great clarity and enthusiasm to our Year Five (9-10 years old) pupils. The children enjoyed exploring inside the bunker. Great museum for children of this age because of the hands on approach. We loved the educational D-Day soldier persentation, talented guide and the chance to handle World War II artefacts. A fitting memorial to all those who gave so much in taking Juno Beach.

It is a very modern museum, with endless artefacts and interactive media that let you make your experience your own. A lot of it is really well put-together. Some of the displays use really simple language and explain obvious things, like who was fighting who in the war. I think that anyone that comes here already probably knows that the Allies were fighting against Hitler’s Germany. Overall though, very well done and greatly interesting. I really enjoyed the radio room, with all the old radios playing old tapes. That was cool, it really takes you back in time.

It was nice to actually see a real war memorial in person rather than just the picture. I believe the Centre is very fitting and properly commemorates the sacrifice the Canadian soldiers made. I liked how some of the original defences were left intact, but how the place has also moved on from the past and is a nice place for people to visit now. As for the museum, I enjoyed the displays. (I wish I would have taken a bit more time to read them.) As well, the introduction movie was good but a little bit confusing. All in all, a most enjoyable experience.

My overall impression was that this memorial will help preserve our history and help show mistakes that were made. Hopefully by preserving our Canadian past, we can remember the sacrifice of a few for the better of many. Everyone has to remember our Canadian pasts. The proximity of the town and the beautiful, sunny day distracted from imagining the action of June 6th, 1944. However, the imaginative architecture and displays in the Centre encouraged comprehension of that day. One quibble about the film room with the landing craft was that the film, although exhilarating, could have ended with more film or photos of the beach front.

Interesting place. The first two rooms of the museum are great. I do hope that over time the Centre will be able to focus entirely on Juno Beach, D-Day or CDN activities in the area of Normandy. The last room, although interesting, seems out of place as it promotes Canada - seems to detract from the D-Day sacrifices. [...] Great presentation from our tour guide Annika. Thank you.

Seeing the place and being on the beach brings a connection with the reality of the past. In the Italian Campaign temporary exhibit, the recreated scene of the house to house fighting was great, certainly superior to just reading about it. The Centre is an important recognition of Canada’s part in the struggle - important for both Canadians and the French. The short introduction movie was different which makes it special.

Our guide Annika's opening comments about the Juno Beach Centre and the importance of Canadians remembering the great accomplishments of the brave soldiers fighting for our country set our tour in motion. This Centre allows us to keep that memory alive throughout the generations of people who are lucky enough to benefit from the freedoms of the brave. Our students have taken great pride in being able to research a Canadian soldier from the war to honour at the Bény-sur-Mer cemetery. We will leave a cross and Canadian flag as well as do a rubbing of the gravestone. We all feel great pride in doing this project. As a school we have been able to raise enough money to purchase 4 commemorative bricks which again we feel is such ah honour to those who have fought so bravely.

A visit to France would be an incomplete experience for our students if we did not visit this most significant memorial to the Canadian war efforts. It is truly a humbling experience to be able to view the location and to see the artefacts that are available here at the museum. Having visited this location on a previous tour, we know that many of our student have remarked that their visit to the Juno Beach Centre was the most significant and meaningful part of their tour of France. The students are really impressed with the quality of the artefacts, the technology used, the knowledge and enthusiasm of the tour guides, and most of all, gain a greater understanding and appreciation of the Canadian sacrifice, not just during WWII, but throughout the entire war effort. We are very pleased to have such a world-class facility highlighting Canadian war efforts, and believe that this facility provides an excellent educational opportunity for all visitors. C’est un musée extraordinaire. Merci beaucoup!

Our Juno Beach Centre tour guide was an excellent, informative speaker. The architecture was interesting, and I loved the fact that it was symbolic of the maple leaf. The monuments were interesting even before the tour guide explained them, but after she talked about them, they really meant something to me. I enjoyed visiting the Juno Beach Centre because it was very informative. I was very proud to know Canadians had created it and for Canada to have fought in the war. It was also the first museum I’ve gone to in France that had both English and French plaques explaining the exhibits. The way the introduction video was shown was very different and effective for expressing the actual thoughts and feelings of people in Canada during war. Everything was well presented. It was definitely an unusual experience to go in the bunker.

Obstacles.

A well informed establishment but it feels too light hearted. Not enough people realize the importance of D-Day and Canadian commitment and contribution. This museum informs us but lacks impact. Our generation needs impact as do future generation because years drive this event further and further away.

Very realistic, seeing the many photos along with the artefacts that came from the many soldiers made it even more of a rewarding experience. The stories and movies from the soldiers demonstrated to me how lucky and fortunate we are. This Centre demonstrated the sheer courage and strength these many men and women faced during and long after the war. Thank you for this reminder.

I think it’s wonderful that we have this Centre built here to honour those who helped in the war. It gives Canadians a sense of pride to see their country represented here. Canada is well-represented in this Centre. There are many artefacts to see; the museum appeals to many senses - sight, touch, hearing, and gives people a lot to learn, take in, and reflect upon. It’s obvious that a lot of thought was put into the design of this museum and the way it presents everything. Well done!

I was very impressed by the overall way(s) in which the information was presented. It was done with much variety while still being clear, and not difficult to understand. However, while I fully understand the importance of the information being presented, I have to admit that it was a little overwhelming. I don’t believe that any information should be removed (I learned quite a few things that I didn’t know before), but I do believe that it could have been more concise.

The Juno Beach Centre is a wonderful tribute to all the Canadian soldiers who lost their lives. I am personally grateful to all the Canadian soldiers who gave their lives to fight in an overseas battle. This is sacred ground for Canadians which I am glad we got to share with French people - adults and young people.

It was very interesting, maybe because today is a good day with lots of sunshine. I really liked the bunker: that was realistic and fun. Also the flags were good. The Canadian flag was in the middle emphasizing the importance of the Canadians. It was educational and fun. I also liked the presentations of our History boxes because we students participated and were having fun.

Super visite.

My overall impression was that this was a great representation of the sacrifices made by the Canadians and that it shows the adversity and courage we have as a nation. The artefacts and memoirs provided an even more moving and appealing aspect to our history. Looking around truly made me feel proud to say that this is part of my heritage and culture. The blood shed reflects the constant feelings of courage in the times we are struggling. Our multicultural society makes us truly unique.

I loved this bit of Canada in France. The staff were very friendly and approachable. The temporary exhibit was very touching and the main exhibit was very effective in making me feel in the 1940s. I thought that the Centre was very informative in not only the military aspect but also the very lives of the soldiers. It made it easy for me to understand and imagine what D-Day, the days before D-Day and the days after might have been like. Although some of the people I read about had brief information, the information presented was effective and kept its importance in relation to D-Day. The layout and presentation of the museum was wonderful because there was a mix of various methods of sharing the events. Thank you so much for the creation of this Centre, it is greatly appreciated and effective for keeping history in remembrance.

Canada terre d’accueil, France pays « cousin ».

From my personal experience at the Juno Beach Centre, I believe myself, along with my classmates and teachers, had a very humbling experience. Our group came away with a better understanding of what went on here during D-Day. In the past we have heard stories, seen movies, but being here in person definitely expanded our understanding of Canada’s role in WW2. This has been a great experience and I look forward to being able to visit again in the future.

My overall impression of JBC is very good. The personnel showed great hospitality, and were very well spoken and educated on the topic. There is only one request that I didn’t get fulfilled - a visit down into the bunker. Otherwise, I would like to give warm compliments to the staff, and to Bronwyn who gave us the beach tour. Bravo!

Really good to learn about Canada’s participation in the war. Especially appreciate it because most of the time it is only the USA whose help is acknowledged, but I think it is also important to know that others, like Canada, also helped to liberate Western Europe.
